We were delighted to bring together members of Whittington Community Centre and Girdlestone Estate for a fascinating heritage workshop delivered by Penelope Diaz, Coordinator for the Over 55s Social Club
The session explored the remarkable history of The Black House on Holloway Road, an important community initiative established in the late 1960s. Set against a backdrop of racial tension and social marginalisation, The Black House became a vital cultural and educational space for vulnerable and disaffected Black young people. It provided opportunities for learning, creativity, empowerment and belonging, leaving a lasting legacy in Islington’s social history.
Through photographs, documentaries and discussion of shared memories, Penelope brought this important chapter of local history to life, encouraging participants to reflect on the value of preserving community stories and recognising the people and places that have shaped the borough we know today.
The workshop formed part of our commitment to celebrating Islington's heritage while creating opportunities for learning, conversation and community connection across generations.
A heartfelt thank you to Penelope Diaz for delivering such an engaging workshop, to Whittington Community Centre for hosting the event, and to all the participants from Whittington Community Centre and Girdlestone Estate for their curiosity, enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions. Together, we continue to explore and celebrate the rich and diverse history of Islington and the communities that have helped shape it.
