The Art of Remembrance

As part of the national Day of Reflection promoted by Marie Curie, Mei Mei Social CIC was proud to deliver The Art of Remembrance, a creative workshop and exhibition that invited members of Girdlestone Art Group and the local community to come together to remember, reflect and express themselves through art.

The project was inspired by the idea that creativity can provide a gentle and meaningful way to process memories, celebrate the lives of loved ones, and create space for conversations that are often difficult to have. Following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, many members of our community experienced bereavement, isolation and significant changes to their daily lives. This workshop offered an opportunity to pause, reconnect and reflect together.

The exhibition featured artwork created by members of the community, celebrating the legacy of those we have lost while rediscovering the stories, personalities and creative spirit they left behind. Participants were then invited to respond through their own artistic practice, exploring drawing, painting and sculpture inspired by the exhibition and by their own personal memories.

The workshop created a safe and supportive environment where participants could share experiences, remember loved ones, and transform emotions into creative expression. It was a moving reminder of the power of art to bring people together, encourage healing and strengthen community connections.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in The Art of Remembrance and shared their stories, creativity and reflections. We are also grateful to Marie Curie for supporting the Day of Reflection, helping communities across the UK create spaces to remember those affected by the pandemic. Together, we demonstrated how art can foster compassion, resilience and hope while ensuring that memories continue to live on through creativity.
